Carlos Alcaraz will contest his first Vienna Open final after beating Daniil Medvedev 6-4 7-6 (7-2) in Saturday's semi-final, according to Sky Sports Tennis.

He will face Alex de Minaur, who produced the bigger shock of the day by beating new world No 1 Alexander Zverev in three sets.

De Minaur took the first set 6-4 before Zverev hit back to level with a 6-1 second set, setting up a decider that De Minaur eventually won 7-6 (4) after two hours and 30 minutes, Tennis365 reported.

The German had arrived in Vienna having lost seven of his previous eight matches against top-10 opposition this season, a run that had fed scrutiny over his hold on the top ranking.

Tension boiled over when Zverev fell a break down in the opening set and turned on the chair umpire over the Dunlop balls used at the ATP 500 event, asking, "Do you think it's normal to play with these balls in a tennis tournament?"

A second flashpoint followed deep in the decider. Serving at 5-6 to stay in the match, Zverev was handed a time violation by umpire Arnaud Gabas, Yahoo Sports reported.

Zverev confronted Gabas at the net, insisting he had been instructed to wait by the umpire himself and that the delay was not his doing. Gabas reversed the time violation, but Zverev went on to lose the tiebreak regardless.

De Minaur described his composure as the deciding factor once the match reached its tightest moments. "Super proud, super proud with how I handled the situation," he said in his on-court interview, as quoted by Tennis365.

"I was very calm, even though I threw in a couple doubles there. I thought, all in all, I played a very aggressive tie-break. I played on my terms. I was going to go out swinging and playing the right type of tennis, and that's what made the difference today."

The win carried extra significance beyond the Vienna draw. Yahoo Sports noted it was De Minaur's first victory over the two-time Grand Slam champion in a solo format, with his only previous wins over Zverev coming at the Laver Cup, twice, and in team events at the ATP Cup and United Cup.

Outside of those occasions, Zverev had won their nine other meetings, underlining how rare Saturday's result was.

The defeat drops Zverev to 3-9 for the season against top-10 opponents, with his only wins in such matches this year coming against Ben Shelton, De Minaur and Taylor Fritz, per Tennis365.

De Minaur's victory also moves him above Rafael Jodar into ninth place in the ATP Race, adding another layer of significance to a result that leaves Zverev facing further questions about his form at the top of the rankings.

Alcaraz and De Minaur now meet for the Vienna Open title, with Alcaraz chasing his first trophy at the tournament after dispatching Medvedev in straight sets to reach the final.
