Doble wins as Silverstone penalty costs Moffat and title wait goes on for Sutton

Mikey Doble took victory in the first BTCC race at Silverstone after team-mate Aiden Moffat was hit with a track-limits penalty, while Ash Sutton had to wait to seal a fifth title.

Mikey Doble claimed victory in the opening British Touring Car Championship race of the day at Silverstone, promoted to the top step after team-mate Aiden Moffat was handed a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits.

The Power Maxed Racing Audi A3 Saloon pairing had controlled the race from the front, with Moffat crossing the line first before the post-race sanction dropped him down the order and handed Doble the win.

The result meant a frustrating outcome for Moffat despite his side of the Power Maxed Racing garage having looked the stronger of the two for much of the running, only for the penalty to undo his afternoon.

Elsewhere in the field, the title picture again failed to resolve itself. Ash Sutton went into the race with a chance to wrap up a record-breaking fifth BTCC championship, but the maths did not quite fall his way.

Sutton finished the race one point shy of what he needed to be confirmed as champion, after Chris Smiley took 11th place in a result that kept the title fight alive rather than settled.

With the destination of the championship still unresolved, attention turns to the remaining races at Silverstone, where Sutton will again have the chance to close out the fifth title that has so far eluded him by the finest of margins.

Doble's win, meanwhile, adds another result to a campaign in which Power Maxed Racing's Audi A3 Saloon has been a regular presence at the front, even if this particular success came via a team-mate's misfortune rather than a straight fight to the flag.
