Juventus held to 1-1 draw by Milan despite dominating shot count

Federico Gatti's stoppage-time header rescued a point for Juventus after Alphadjo Cissè's late first-half strike had punished a night of missed chances at the Allianz Stadium.

Milan (Italy), San Siro, October 31, 1971. Milan AC – Juventus FC 1-4, Matchday 4 of the Italian League 1971–72 Serie A: Juventus' forward Roberto Bettega (no. 11) eludes Milan's defender Giuseppe Sabadini (no. 2) and…

Juventus and AC Milan shared the points in a 1-1 draw at the Allianz Stadium, with Federico Gatti's stoppage-time finish cancelling out Alphadjo Cissè's opener in a game the hosts dominated but could not win.

Luciano Spalletti's side restricted Milan to just three shots across the ninety minutes, according to Yahoo Sports, yet it was the visitors who struck first when Cissè capitalised on a mix-up between Manuel Locatelli and Pierre Kalulu to fire past Guglielmo Vicario.

Juventus had chances of their own throughout, including Francisco Conceição striking the post for the second game running and Nico González skipping past Strahinja Pavlovic before shooting straight at Mike Maignan, but a lack of a cutting edge kept them level rather than ahead.

The equaliser came from the bench. Teun Koopmeiners supplied the cross and Gatti arrived to finish it in stoppage time, sparing Juventus a defeat that would have been hard to reconcile with their control of the match.

Yahoo Sports' player ratings from the game singled out Bremer as the standout performer, awarding him an 8 for a display in which he kept Gonçalo Ramos without a single shot and led the team with six clearances, while also registering a dribble and a key pass.

Jhon Lucumí was rated closely behind on a 7, sharing three tackles as he and Bremer combined to shut down the middle of the pitch whenever Ramos was passed between them.

Zeki Çelik earned a 6.5 for a solid two-way display that included a key pass and a cross that Koni De Winter had to scramble clear to deny Randal Kolo Muani a free header, with the ratings noting how comfortably he has settled into the side compared with Andrea Cambiaso.

It was a tougher night further back and further forward. Vicario was marked down to a 5, with the analysis questioning whether better anticipation could have kept out Cissè's shot despite the defensive breakdown in front of him, while Kalulu was given the same score for an uncharacteristically sloppy performance in possession and in defending the opening goal.

Locatelli's mark of 5 reflected what Yahoo Sports described as a second consecutive underwhelming game, with his part in Cissè's space to shoot highlighted as a lapse from a player usually reliable at the back end of midfield.

Douglas Luiz was credited as Juventus' most incisive presence from midfield, leading the team with two key passes on a 6 rating, while Conceição's post-hitting evening was marked down slightly for a pass completion of 82.8 per cent and a wrong-footed shot that made Maignan's save straightforward.

Kerim Alajbegovic impressed early before fading, co-leading the team in dribbles on a 6, and Randal Kolo Muani was the lowest-rated outfield performer among those assessed, marked at 4.5 in an evening where service into him was in short supply.

The draw leaves Juventus with work to do on their finishing if they are to sustain a challenge for Champions League qualification this season, a target the performance in Turin did little to advance despite the balance of play running clearly in their favour.
