Kane misses penalty as late Fabio Silva goal salvages Dortmund draw

Harry Kane struck the crossbar from the spot and later hit the post as Bayern Munich were pegged back 2-2 by Borussia Dortmund in a six-goal, woodwork-rattling Klassiker that left both sides level at the top of the Bundesliga.

Harry Kane missed a penalty and struck the woodwork as Bayern Munich were denied victory by a stoppage-time leveller from substitute Fabio Silva, Borussia Dortmund escaping with a 2-2 draw in Der Klassiker on Saturday.

The result kept both clubs locked on 18 points at the summit of the Bundesliga, with Bayern ahead only on goal difference.

It was Kane's first start since being named Ballon d'Or winner, having collected the award at a ceremony in London on Monday and sat out Bayern's 6-1 German Cup win over Magdeburg in midweek as an unused substitute.

Before kick-off, Dortmund coach Niko Kovac had urged his players to combine forces to contain the striker, describing him as "sensational" and warning that stopping him would take collective rather than individual effort. "We won't get this done one on one, we'll need to do it together," Kovac said, adding that his side would need "90 minutes at the highest level" to take anything from Munich.

Kane's afternoon brought mixed fortunes. With Bayern 1-0 up, he saw his 56th-minute penalty cannon off the crossbar, and he later struck the post himself — one of four times the hosts hit the woodwork during a chaotic contest.

Bayern had led through Konrad Laimer, who converted on the rebound in the 38th minute after his initial effort was saved by Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. Earlier, Bayern had also struck the post through Michael Olise and seen Ismael Saibari waste a clear chance, while a Dortmund goal was ruled out by VAR.

Dortmund drew level through Serhou Guirassy on the hour mark, only for Bayern to restore their advantage six minutes later when Dayot Upamecano tapped in from close range after Kane supplied the assist.

Silva's equaliser arrived in the 89th minute to deny Bayern victory, and Lennart Karl almost snatched a winner in stoppage time, his effort also cannoning off the crossbar.

Laimer, deployed at full-back, was arguably more of a threat than Kane on the day. Bayern remain without head coach Vincent Kompany, who is recovering after collapsing at the club's training ground last week. According to Yahoo Sports, Bayern board member Max Eberl said Kompany was treated for meningeal irritation and has since been discharged from hospital, having also been managing a viral infection and a hip injury beforehand. Assistant Aaron Danks took charge of the side again in his absence.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, Freiburg beat Augsburg 2-1 thanks to Cyriaque Irié's 85th-minute strike to stay third, while RB Leipzig moved into fourth with a 2-0 win over Schalke. Werder Bremen's Niclas Füllkrug, the division's leading scorer, netted his ninth goal of the season in a 2-0 win over Hoffenheim that lifted his side to fifth. Bayer Leverkusen suffered a second straight defeat, losing 4-2 at home to Stuttgart, while Borussia Mönchengladbach and Paderborn played out a goalless draw.

In La Liga, Barcelona responded to recent defeats to Real Madrid and Paris St Germain with a 6-1 demolition of Alaves at Camp Nou, with Raphinha, Fermín López and Anthony Gordon among the scorers. The win took Barcelona to 30 points at the top of the table, two clear of Atlético Madrid, who beat Levante 2-0 earlier in the day. Real Madrid sit six points off the pace ahead of their trip to Racing Santander on Sunday.
