McIlroy Rebounds From Abu Dhabi Penalty With Career-Best 63

Rory McIlroy recovered from a two-shot penalty to card an 11-birdie round in Abu Dhabi, having earlier backed claims that LIV Golf set out to damage the DP World Tour.

Rory McIlroy produced the best round of birdies in his DP World Tour career on Friday, carding an 11-birdie 63 at the Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship to climb into a tie for fourth at 11 under par heading into the weekend.

The round, reported by Golf Channel and cited by Yahoo Sports, arrived a day after McIlroy had been hit with a two-stroke penalty for attempting to improve his lie on the 12th hole, turning what had been a 68 into a 70. McIlroy accepted he had made a mistake but said it was accidental.

He did not let the incident affect him on Friday, surging up the leaderboard and putting himself in contention entering the final two rounds. He is currently second in the world rankings behind Scottie Scheffler, having won his second consecutive Masters title in April.

The week had already carried wider significance for McIlroy before a ball was struck. Speaking to media on Wednesday ahead of the event, as reported by Guardian Golf, the six-time major winner backed comments from DP World Tour chief executive Guy Kinnings in an interview with the Scotsman, in which Kinnings alleged that LIV Golf's objective had been to "destroy" the European circuit.

McIlroy said that "LIV turned pro golf into an arms race", while Kinnings countered criticism of his own tour by stating "We pay everyone on time."

Away from Abu Dhabi, McIlroy has also featured in a separate piece of analysis published by Golf Monthly, which set out to establish which of three leading players would have finished the 2026 PGA Tour season with the lowest handicap index had they started the year without one.

The publication compared McIlroy with Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick, noting the trio won six individual PGA Tour titles between them during the season. Golf Monthly built the calculation from every scorecard the three players returned in individual PGA Tour events between the American Express in January and the Tour Championship in August.

The methodology excluded non-co-sanctioned tournaments, scores recorded on the DP World Tour and the team-format Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Scores from the Masters were also left out, since Augusta National does not carry a course rating or Slope rating under the World Handicap System.

Golf Monthly's review of Scheffler's season recorded three further PGA Tour victories and a second FedExCup title, despite the world No 1 going without a major championship win in 2026.

McIlroy's immediate focus remains on the course in Abu Dhabi, where he still has work to do over the weekend if he is to add another DP World Tour title to a year already defined by his Masters success.
