Nneka Ogwumike was honoured prior to the Los Angeles Sparks' WNBA game against the Las Vegas Aces on Tuesday, September 22, at Michelob ULTRA Arena, part of a wave of tributes since she confirmed her retirement.

The Sparks forward announced she was ending her WNBA career in an interview for the Boardroom with Taylor Rooks on August 19, closing a chapter that has included her role as president of the Players' Union.

Since then, teammates and coaches have spoken publicly about what she has meant to the Sparks and to the league, according to Yahoo Sports, which gathered quotes from players and staff over recent weeks.

Cameron Brink said Ogwumike had shaped her both on and off the court, describing her as one of her favourite people and praising the calm she brings to the team every day.

Ariel Atkins said Ogwumike had proven consistent throughout her career, calling her one of the best teammates she has played alongside and admitting she would be sad not to share the court with her next season.

Rae Burrell, who entered the league as a rookie under Ogwumike's mentorship, credited her with helping redefine standards of professionalism at the Sparks and pointed to her direct involvement in weekly CBA meetings during the offseason as evidence of her influence on player pay.

Erica Wheeler, whom several teammates describe as especially close to Ogwumike, admitted mixed emotions about the announcement. "Man, I don't want her to retire," she said, while also stressing that she respected the decision because it was being made on Ogwumike's own terms.

Sparks coach Lynne Roberts said Ogwumike carries a rare balance of confidence and humility that lifts those around her, describing her presence in both games and the locker room as steadying and accountable without ever alienating teammates.

Tonie Morgan said Ogwumike had taken her under her wing from the moment she joined the team, sharing advice from the sidelines and baseline whenever the opportunity arose.

Jihyun Park, speaking through a translator, said sharing Ogwumike's final season had been an honour and that watching her daily approach as a professional had been instructive for the younger players on the roster.

Chance Gray added her own tribute, calling Ogwumike a good mentor and a good role model for the squad.

The comments reflect the scale of Ogwumike's standing within the WNBA, both as a player and through her work leading the Players' Union, as her final Sparks campaign draws towards its close.
