Rangers held at Hearts as Boyd doubts their title pedigree

Olwethu Makhanya's late header rescued a 2-2 draw for Rangers at Tynecastle on Derek McInnes' first return, prompting Kris Boyd to question their Scottish Premiership credentials.

Rangers came from behind twice to draw 2-2 at Hearts on a night dominated by the return of Derek McInnes to Tynecastle, with Olwethu Makhanya's stoppage-time header denying the hosts a first win over his new club.

Guardian Football reported that home supporters jeered McInnes as he walked out for his first game back at Tynecastle since departing for Ibrox in June, a move that came only weeks after Hearts had been pipped to the Scottish Premiership title.

Rangers took an early lead when Kevin Kelsy pounced on a Hearts mistake in the 15th minute, playing a one-two with Ryan Don Naderi before finishing coolly for his fourth goal of the season, Yahoo Sports reported.

Hearts had chances to respond before the break, with Claudio Braga's low effort gathered by Ivor Pandur and Laurent Mendy heading over from a free-kick, while Pandur also smothered a near-post effort from a Rafael Altena set piece in first-half stoppage time.

The hosts emerged transformed after the interval. Within three minutes of the restart, a free-kick found Fagan-Walcott's header across goal, and Braga tapped home from close range to level the match at 1-1.

Hearts completed the turnaround in the 57th minute when Calvin Miller slotted home the rebound after Braga's effort had been blocked, putting the home side 2-1 ahead and in control at Tynecastle.

Braga went close to a third late on, beating his marker before firing a tame effort straight at the Rangers goalkeeper, while Sabah Kerjota and JJ Williams combined on the counter in the 82nd minute without troubling the visitors further.

Rangers were pressing in the closing stages and found their reward when Makhanya directed a header into the far corner to secure a 2-2 draw and deny Hearts what would have been a landmark win over their former manager.

The result prompted former Rangers striker Kris Boyd to question the side's ability to sustain a title challenge. "If you're going to win a league, there has to be periods in games where you dominate that game... Rangers don't do that," Boyd said, as reported by Sky Sports Football.

Elsewhere in the Scottish Premiership that weekend, Celtic also had to settle for a point, a result that left Martin O'Neill "disappointed" following the outcome against Dundee United, Guardian Football reported.

The draw leaves Rangers still searching for the kind of commanding away performance Boyd believes is required of genuine title contenders, with their next test likely to shape how seriously that question is taken as the Premiership season continues.
