Rybakina claims Ningbo title to lead 2026 WTA Finals field

Elena Rybakina's 6-2, 6-2 win over Leylah Fernandez in Ningbo took her to four titles for the season, moving her clear of Aryna Sabalenka and Mirra Andreeva, and underlined her status as top seed for the season-ending WTA Finals in Indian Wells.

Elena Rybakina beat Leylah Fernandez 6-2, 6-2 in the Ningbo Open final to retain the title and become the first player to win the event in back-to-back years, according to Yahoo Sports.

The world number one dropped only a handful of games across her run to the trophy. She saw off Polina Kudermetova 5-0 in the last 16 before Kudermetova retired, beat Katarzyna Kawa 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 in the quarter-finals, then edged past Diana Shnaider 6-3, 7-5 in the semi-finals.

A member of the Sky Sports commentary team described the final as "an extremely dominant display from the world number one", Yahoo Sports reported.

Rybakina paid tribute to her beaten opponent afterwards, telling the crowd, "Hello everyone. I want to congratulate Leylah with a great week." She also thanked her backroom staff, saying, "I'd like to say thank you to my team. Most of them are back home supporting and watching. Thank you so much guys. And thank you to Stas for staying with me this week and supporting each match."

The Ningbo win was Rybakina's fourth WTA Tour title of 2026, following victories at the Australian Open, the Stuttgart Open and, in September, a maiden US Open crown. Both Grand Slam finals that season were won against Aryna Sabalenka, per Yahoo Sports.

That fourth title moved Rybakina one clear of Sabalenka and Mirra Andreeva, who have each won three tournaments in 2026, making her the outright leader in title wins on tour this year.

The result also confirmed Rybakina's place at the top of the eight-player field for the season-ending WTA Finals, staged this year in Indian Wells, according to Tennis365. She was the first player to secure qualification, on the back of her US Open run, and enters as defending champion after winning last year's edition without dropping a match. It will be her fourth successive appearance at the tournament.

Sabalenka, a two-time runner-up at the Finals, was the next player to book her spot, followed by Mirra Andreeva and Linda Noskova, both Grand Slam winners this year. Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula followed, with Elina Svitolina becoming the seventh qualifier.

The final berth went to Karolina Muchova after Iga Swiatek withdrew from the Ningbo Open through injury and Marta Kostyuk also picked up an injury, ending their hopes of reaching the field, Tennis365 reported.

Andreeva, Noskova and Muchova will all make their WTA Finals debuts, while Rybakina, Gauff and Svitolina have each won the title before. For Swiatek, the 2024 champion, it marks the first time since 2020 that she will not feature at the season finale.

Per Tennis365's figures from the Live Rankings Race, Rybakina leads the standings on 8,001 points with a 53-14 win-loss record this season, ahead of Sabalenka on 6,550 points with a 47-11 record. Rybakina has also been runner-up at Indian Wells and in Canada this year, in addition to her four titles.

Attention now turns to the WTA Finals itself, where Rybakina will begin as top seed and defending champion against a field featuring three debutants and the game's biggest names chasing the season's final prize.
