Sovereignty Wins Breeders' Cup Classic to Seal Horse of the Year Claim

The 2025 Kentucky Derby winner surged clear under Junior Alvarado at Keeneland to claim the $7 million Classic and set up retirement to stud.

Sovereignty confirmed his status as the outstanding American thoroughbred of the year with a length-and-three-quarter victory in the $7 million Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland on Saturday, reported Sky Sports Racing.

Junior Alvarado, who has partnered the William Mott-trained colt through every major stakes success, produced a sweeping late run to overhaul The Puma, who finished second, with Knightsbridge third, according to Yahoo Sports.

The jockey described feeling in total control as the field turned for home. "Turning in the back side, I was like oh boy, I can't wait to turn for home because I knew the power I have underneath me," Alvarado said. "The way he was traveling the whole time, letting me know, like, I'm here for you. I never had a doubt the whole way around."

The pace of the mile-and-a-quarter contest was shaped by the late scratching of Magnitude earlier in the week, which left Mott's other runner, Knightsbridge, able to set a more relaxed tempo for much of the race before being swallowed up late on.

Sovereignty's path to Keeneland had been far from straightforward. The Godolphin-owned colt missed last year's Classic after being scratched with a fever, prompting his connections to keep him in training for another season rather than retire him immediately.

That decision paid off with victories in this year's Travers Stakes and the Whitney before the Classic, building towards what Yahoo Sports described as a long-held target for the stable.

There was a significant upset further down the field, with the Japan-trained 30-1 shot T O Password crossing the line fourth ahead of the fancied Forever Young in fifth, under Daisuke Takayanagi's handling.

The bigger shock, though, was the sixth-placed finish of Golden Tempo, winner of this year's Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. Yahoo Sports noted that the colt, trained by Cherie DeVaux, never featured in the finish and showed little of the form that had made him one of the season's leading three-year-olds.

Sovereignty's win takes his career earnings to $10.6 million, a figure built on victories in the Kentucky Derby, the Belmont Stakes, the Travers Stakes and now the Breeders' Cup Classic.

That body of work, completed in the colours of Godolphin, is set to be his last. The Classic marks the end of his racing career, with retirement to stud confirmed at Darley America and Godolphin's Jonabell Farm.

Fittingly, the move requires no great journey, with Jonabell Farm located close to Keeneland, the track where he closed out his racing days with his most significant win.
