Volkanovski defends featherweight title against unbeaten Evloev at UFC 333
Alexander Volkanovski puts his belt on the line against Movsar Evloev in Abu Dhabi, with a second title fight and past sparring history adding extra intrigue to the card.

Alexander Volkanovski headlines UFC 333 against unbeaten challenger Movsar Evloev on Saturday, defending his featherweight title inside the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, with the event streaming exclusively on Paramount+, according to Yahoo Sports.
The card also carries a second title fight, with Petr Yan facing Merab Dvalishvili for a third time for the bantamweight belt. The rest of the main card features Lone'er Kavanagh against Ramazan Temirov, Alexander Volkov versus Rizvan Kuniev, and Aaron Pico taking on Losene Keita.
Dominick Reyes meets Azamat Murzakanov in the featured preliminary bout, while the undercard also includes Nikita Krylov against prospect Abdul Rakhman Yakhyaev and Abus Magomedov versus Cam Rowston, Yahoo Sports reported.
Volkanovski, who recently turned 38, arrives off a decision win over Diego Lopes at UFC 325 in January, a result that followed another points victory over the same opponent the previous year. That earlier win had brought him the vacant title after Ilia Topuria relinquished it, the Independent reported. The two Lopes wins also marked his recovery from knockout defeats to Topuria and Islam Makhachev.
Evloev takes his unbeaten record of 10-0 in the UFC and 20-0 overall into his first world title opportunity. He secured the shot with a majority decision over Britain's Lerone Murphy at UFC London in March, a result the Independent described as controversial. That win capped his comeback from an injury lay-off of 15 months, having previously produced another contested decision over former bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling.
Betting markets reflect the closeness of the contest. Yahoo Sports listed both fighters at -110 on the moneyline, while the Independent reported odds of 10/11 for each man to win via Betway.
Volkanovski has previously sparred with Evloev, and was asked about those sessions by Red Corner MMA. "I'm not one to talk, I'm not one to talk," he said, before adding: "Again, it was a long, long time ago. He was only young, but yeah, I'll leave it at that."
The champion also reflected on Evloev's rise, telling the outlet that the Russian's level has changed significantly since they trained together, and that he had expected him to break through in the UFC once he saw him compete. Volkanovski said of Evloev's path to this weekend: "I think he should've got a title shot before this weekend. He deserved it maybe a year or two ago to be honest, so yeah, glad he gets his shot. He deserves it."
Yahoo Sports' own assessment of the matchup suggested Evloev, having shown his striking against Murphy, could revert to wrestling-heavy tactics to try to control Volkanovski across five rounds, while cautioning that doing so against a champion of Volkanovski's calibre is far from straightforward.
UFC 333 takes place on Saturday, 24 October, with the Volkanovski-Evloev and Yan-Dvalishvili title fights topping a card built around five main-card bouts and three featured preliminary contests.
