Raphinha double ends Villa's European run at Camp Nou

Raphinha scored twice after the break as Barcelona eased to a 3-0 Champions League win over Aston Villa, halting Unai Emery's side's three-match winning run in the competition.

Raphinha scored twice in the second half as Barcelona beat Aston Villa 3-0 at the Camp Nou in the Champions League, a result that ended Unai Emery's side's run of three consecutive wins in the competition, according to Sky Sports Football.

The Guardian's Barney Ronay, reporting from the Camp Nou, described a chastening evening for Villa and a familiar one for Emery in that part of the city, with Barcelona delivering what he termed "unhurried, high-grade incision" on a chilly, damp night that never threatened to become a genuine contest.

Ronay noted that Barcelona's blend of patient possession and the open spaces left behind their high defensive line always offers opponents a route back in, but Villa were unable to find it, kept at distance throughout the match.

Barcelona had arrived at the fixture off the back of a heavy win over Alaves in La Liga, though manager Hansi Flick flagged a late lapse in that game at his pre-match press conference, saying: "There was a mistake at the end – that happens sometimes – but I saw good work and conviction."

The German had stressed in the build-up that his focus was entirely on Villa rather than the weekend's La Liga meeting with Atletico Madrid, telling reporters: "I'm focusing on Aston Villa. Unai Emery is one of the best managers in Europe; they have a very clear idea of how to play both in defence and attack. It'll be a tough match. The Champions League is special and the opposition are top-class."

Flick had also praised the way Emery's side build from the back, saying he liked their organisation and their confidence on the ball, and singled out the Villa attacker Jackson, describing him as performing at an incredible level, according to Yahoo Sports.

Barcelona had gone into the game managing an injury list, with Flick saying beforehand, "When you're dealing with injuries, you have to stay focused, and we're doing well," while giving a guarded update on Andreas Christensen, who had trained only on positional work and whose involvement would not be confirmed until the weekend.

The win keeps Flick's side on course in the competition's league phase, with Yahoo Sports noting before kick-off that Barcelona were looking to strengthen their chances of finishing in the top eight after a previous defeat to holders PSG in this season's Champions League.

For Villa, the defeat halts the momentum built over their previous three Champions League outings and leaves Emery facing familiar frustrations against Barcelona on their own ground.

Barcelona next turn their attention to La Liga, where they are due to face Atletico Madrid at the weekend, a fixture Flick had already been asked about before the Villa match despite insisting his focus lay solely on the European tie.
