Barcelona 3-0 Aston Villa: Rodri injury overshadows Yamal and Raphinha show

Lamine Yamal and a Raphinha double ended Aston Villa's perfect Champions League start at Camp Nou, but Barcelona's night was clouded by a suspected calf injury to Rodri.

Aston Villa's unbeaten start to this season's Champions League came to an end at the Spotify Nou Camp, where Barcelona won 3-0 courtesy of an early Lamine Yamal strike and a second-half double from Raphinha.

Yamal opened the scoring in the seventh minute after intercepting a stray pass from Joao Gomes following a Villa goal kick, cutting inside before bending a finish into the bottom corner, according to Yahoo Sports.

Raphinha doubled Barcelona's lead in the 52nd minute, scuffing a shot into the corner, before adding a third in the 64th, turning in a first-time finish from an outside-of-the-foot cross supplied by Joao Cancelo.

The result left Unai Emery's side with three wins from four Champions League group matches, having previously beaten Club Brugge, Fenerbahce and Viking, with the BBC describing the trip to Catalonia as by far their hardest test of the campaign.

Emery was seen punching the air in frustration as Villa fell 2-0 behind, having matched Barcelona for long periods of an engrossing first half in heavy rain and, by the BBC's account, arguably deserved to be level before Gomes' error gifted Yamal the opener.

Barcelona have now won 13 of their 15 games in all competitions this season, the BBC reported, with Emery using the fixture as what he called a barometer of how far his own side still has to travel to match the La Liga leaders.

Barcelona's evening was not without concern. Rodri, Spain's World Cup-winning captain, was forced off with a suspected calf injury at half-time and replaced by Marc Bernal, Yahoo Sports reported.

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick said the midfielder "felt some muscular pain" and added: "It'll need to wait until Wednesday before we examine that and find out more."

The injury carries added significance with Barcelona due to travel to Atletico Madrid on Sunday for a top-of-the-table La Liga meeting, a fixture they currently lead by two points, according to Yahoo Sports.

Tuesday's match was also watched by Prince William at Camp Nou, described by Yahoo Sports as Aston Villa's most famous supporter, in what proved a difficult return to the stadium for Emery as Villa manager.

For Villa, the defeat ends their 100% start in this season's competition but does not derail their wider progress under Emery, who turned 55 on the eve of the fixture and has overseen a sustained rise at Villa Park, as the Independent has noted in its coverage of the club's growing Champions League status.

Attention in Birmingham now turns to how Villa respond domestically, while Barcelona must assess Rodri's fitness before Sunday's title showdown at Atletico Madrid, a result that could shape the destination of the La Liga leadership heading into the second half of the season.
