Emery tips Barcelona for Champions League glory before Camp Nou trip

Unai Emery has named Barcelona among the Champions League favourites and praised Lamine Yamal as Aston Villa prepare for their visit to the Spotify Camp Nou, with questions over the manager's own future still swirling.

Aston Villa travel to the Spotify Camp Nou for a Champions League meeting with Barcelona, and manager Unai Emery has placed Hansi Flick's side among the handful of clubs he considers genuine contenders to lift the trophy this season.

Speaking before the fixture, Emery pointed to Barcelona's recent history and current form as his reasoning. "They're the favourites to win this competition, given their current form and what they've accomplished over the past decade," he said, as reported by Yahoo Sports, citing the Spanish outlet SPORT.

He went further in narrowing down the elite group he believes can win the competition. "We can count them on one hand—five teams—and one of them is Barça," Emery said.

The Villa manager also flagged the scale of the challenge his side face if Barcelona perform near their best. "If Barça plays at its best, it can beat anyone," he said.

Emery singled out Lamine Yamal for particular praise, suggesting the Barcelona teenager has the attributes to develop into the best player in the world, according to Yahoo Sports.

The trip to Catalonia arrives amid continued debate over Emery's own future. The Spaniard wore his Aston Villa blazer to last week's Ballon d'Or ceremony, a gesture the Independent's Richard Jolly suggested could be read either as a statement of loyalty amid speculation over the Manchester United job becoming vacant, or simply a matter of personal preference.

Jolly rates Emery, alongside Manchester City's Mikel Arteta, as one of the two finest managers currently working in the Premier League and one of the best in Europe, pointing to his record of five Europa League triumphs as evidence of that standing.

The Independent frames the Camp Nou fixture as more than a routine away day, casting it as a marker of Villa's growing status within the European game, even as questions persist about whether a club from England's second city can be considered to belong among the continent's leading sides.

That debate over Villa's standing was sharpened last week by comments from Jamie Carragher on Sky Sports' Super Sunday, which prompted the club to threaten legal action against the pundit. Guardian Football's Barry Glendenning reported that chairman Nassef Sawiris oversaw a statement accusing Carragher of "unacceptable insults" and attempting to prevent the club's "ascension in English and European football".

The Independent noted that the threat of a lawsuit struck many observers as frankly silly, with the statement itself issued through the club's social media channels rather than formal legal correspondence, a method Glendenning likened to tactics previously associated with Nottingham Forest.

Villa now turn their attention to Tuesday's Champions League fixture at the Spotify Camp Nou, where Emery's side will be tested against opponents he himself has installed among the competition's favourites.
