England Rout Australia 45-22 to Rally Behind Steve Borthwick

Henry Pollock and Immanuel Feyi-Waboso inspired a seven-try demolition of the Wallabies at Twickenham, a show of unity around Steve Borthwick after reports of discord in camp.

England beat Australia 45-22 at Twickenham, a scoreline Yahoo Sports described as a record victory over the Wallabies and one of the most complete attacking displays of the Steve Borthwick era.

Seven tries were shared around as England overwhelmed their opponents, with Henry Pollock and Immanuel Feyi-Waboso combining for three of them in an electric showing from the two wings, according to Yahoo Sports.

Feyi-Waboso had repeatedly cut through the Australian defence before limping off with a leg injury at half-time, with Seb Atkinson also forced out of the match, a setback for Borthwick's selection options.

Pollock, introduced as cover on the wing, took the opportunity in style and scored twice, with Yahoo Sports crediting his adaptability for softening the blow of losing Feyi-Waboso.

Maro Itoje led from the front in what the Independent described as a refreshed and recharged display, while Henry Slade was named man of the match for his control of the midfield. Ollie Chessum was also singled out for an impressive shift.

Yahoo Sports noted that England avoided the indiscipline that had produced 15 yellow cards across their previous eight Tests in 2026, a problem that had undermined previous performances this year.

The Independent framed the win as a direct response to a week of scrutiny, after a report published on Thursday alleged division within the camp and, in Yahoo Sports' account, described a toxic environment presided over by Borthwick during the July tour.

Borthwick said the squad had used the week to block out the noise. "I am really pleased for the players and supporters that we were able to produce that," he said. "The players have been laser-focused on producing that performance."

The head coach added that several of his predecessors had been in contact in the build-up to the game, their message summed up as: "been there, got the t-shirt, focus on the rugby". "That's what I've done this week," he said. "That's what the players and staff around the players have done this week."

The scrutiny around Borthwick has extended beyond this fixture. Ruck reported renewed questions over his long-term position, naming a surprise contender to eventually replace him and noting that the RFU has backed him through the 2027 World Cup despite a difficult Six Nations in which England won just one of five matches.

Yahoo Sports pointed out that Saturday's meeting was the last between the two sides before a prospective World Cup quarter-final next year, adding extra context to the manner of England's victory over a Wallabies side it described as looking as though they had just stepped off the plane.

The Independent cautioned that the result alone will not settle the wider questions hanging over Borthwick's tenure, with three more weeks of this campaign still to reveal how far the faith shown by his players on the pitch translates into sustained form.
