Fickell Previews Hostile Happy Valley Test as Badgers Open Big Ten Play

Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell discussed Penn State's quarterback threat, young cornerbacks and an injury update as the Badgers prepare for their Big Ten opener, according to Yahoo Sports.

Wisconsin travel to Happy Valley in Week 4 to open their Big Ten schedule against No. 13 Penn State, with the Badgers installed as 10-point underdogs, according to Yahoo Sports.

Head coach Luke Fickell met with reporters this week and said the focus had already shifted away from Wisconsin's Week 3 win over Eastern Michigan and onto the demands of conference play.

"I'm not going to dwell on a lot of last week," Fickell said, according to Yahoo Sports, while adding that he had seen growth in his team across the first three weeks of the season.

He noted this will be Wisconsin's first true road test of the year, and the first time the Badgers have had to prepare for a genuinely hostile Big Ten environment, with the season-opening game having been played at a neutral site.

The kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Eastern, and Fickell said few venues compare to Happy Valley for atmosphere, particularly given the stakes for Penn State, who will be playing their own Big Ten opener under a new head coach.

On the opposing quarterback, Fickell praised the growth shown by Penn State's signal-caller, Rocco Becht, describing him as a dual-threat option who has developed as both a passer and a manager of the game without needing to rely heavily on his legs so far this season.

"It's a definite challenge," Fickell said, according to Yahoo Sports, adding that while Wisconsin faced a strong quarterback in Week 1, Becht presents a different set of problems for the defence.

Fickell also addressed the development of Wisconsin's young cornerback group, singling out Javan Robinson, Eric Fletcher and Jai'mier Scott, who he said have taken on almost all the defensive snaps at that position.

He explained that Robinson has predominantly played the boundary while Fletcher and Scott have worked mainly on the field side, but that last week gave the coaching staff a chance to rotate the trio between those roles.

Fickell described it as an important step in the development of Fletcher, who is in his first year with the programme, and Robinson, who is in his first year of significant playing time, and said Penn State's less spread-out formations could present a different test given the extra space it creates on the field.

On the injury front, Fickell provided an update on Abu Sama, saying the running back had been cleared to play last week but that the final call became a game-time decision.

"He warmed up with every intention of playing and going," Fickell said, according to Yahoo Sports, before explaining that the staff ultimately felt Sama was not quite ready to take the field.

Fickell said he was hopeful Sama would be further along this week having avoided contact the previous game, though he stressed the team would not know for certain until closer to kickoff.

Asked about the leadership of veteran receivers Chris Brooks and Tyrell Henry, Fickell pointed to their role in setting a tone for the younger players, framing it as the kind of developmental process he has always valued in college football.

Wisconsin's Big Ten opener against Penn State kicks off Saturday at 5:00 p.m. Eastern in Happy Valley, with the Badgers looking to carry momentum from their Week 3 performance into conference play.
